Cartoon Contender breaks down where animation has been submitted for 2026 Emmy consideration across writing, music, casting, and sound categories.

The ballots for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards have been revealed. Naturally, animation is bound to be represented in Outstanding Animated Program, Individual Achievement in Animation, and Character Voice-Over Performance. There are several other categories in which animation has been submitted, ranging from casting, to music, to sound to writing. Notably, the Outstanding Sound Editing For an Animated Program category has seemingly been retired after only a year, once again being combined with half-hour drama and comedy series.

Of the aforementioned shows, Long Story Short popped up the most with ten submissions. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, Stranger Things: Tales From '85, and Invincible each came up eight times. Interestingly, Grimsburg is mentioned in three categories, although it wasn’t submitted for Outstanding Animated Program this year. That’s likely because it only aired five episodes during this eligibility cycle. Compared to last year, there are fewer animated submissions in Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series is another story with fourteen submissions. Will this be the year the Writers Peer Group finally nominates an animated show, though?
