KPop Demon Hunters has been nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.” If it wins both, KPop Demon Hunters will be the first non-Disney/Pixar animated film to take home multiple Oscars. That’s not the only milestone that KPop Demon Hunters can reach with two potential wins. It could be the most awarded film at the 98th Oscars that isn’t up for Best Picture. Most of this year’s nominees across the 24 categories are also contending for Best Picture, a growing trend at the Oscars since the top race was expanded in 2009. This year, there are only five films not up for Best Picture that got nominated in more than one category: Avatar: Fire and Ash, Blue Moon, It Was Just an Accident, Sirāt, and, of course, KPop Demon Hunters.
All the above are up for two Oscars, but KPop Demon Hunters is in the best position to win both of its bids. Avatar: Fire and Ash winning Best Visual Effects is a forgone conclusion, even with Best Picture nominees F1 and Sinners also in the category. Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Fire and Ash was also nominated for Best Costume Design. Although the nomination confused many (including myself), Deborah Lynn Scott did make physical costumes for the Na’vi clans, which the effects artists used as references. With that in mind, this is a pretty cool nomination, especially since costumes in digital effects-heavy productions (not to mention animated productions) are rarely recognized. Frankenstein or Sinners seems like the most probable winner of the Best Costumes Oscar, however.
Some are still clinging to the notion that Ethan Hawke can win Best Actor for Blue Moon. I’ve never seen this happening. With Hawke’s fellow four nominees all in Best Picture contenders, he would need to win the BAFTA and Actor Award for his time to come at the Oscars. Blue Moon is even less inclined to win Best Original Screenplay, which is a race between Sinners and Sentimental Value. I once thought It Was Just an Accident could’ve been win competitive in the screenplay category. However, that was back when it looked like Jafar Panahi’s film might also get nominated for Best Picture and Director. Instead, Accident’s only other nomination is in Best International Feature.
Sirāt is also up for Best International Feature, but that race will come down to Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent, both Best Picture nominees. It wouldn’t be surprising if Sirāt prevailed in its other category, Best Sound. With F1, Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, and Sinners also nominated, Best Sound could go in any number of directions. After The Zone of Interest won a couple of years ago, though, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Academy went with another international film where the sound is the star. Even then, Sirāt would only win one Oscar.
This just leaves KPop Demon Hunters, which is considered the frontrunner for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. “Golden” has already won Best Song at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. Only two songs have won both of those awards without winning the Oscar as well: “Old Habits Die Hard” from Alfie and the titular song from The Wrestler, neither of which was ultimately nominated for the Oscar. Considering that Sinners broke the Oscar nominations record (16), “I Lied to You” could still pull an upset. Since composer Ludwig Göransson is also nominated for Best Original Score, though, AMPAS has another category where they can recognize Sinners’ music. If “Golden” wins the Oscar, it’ll be the first song from a non-Disney/Pixar animated film to do so since DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt. Despite there being three other nominees, “Golden” and “I Lied to You” will be the only songs performed on the Oscar telecast. Now watch Diane Warren pull the ultimate upset!
KPop Demon Hunters has also won the CCA and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. The film is currently up for Best Animated Feature at PGA and the Annie Awards. If KPop Demon Hunters loses at either of those shows, it’s vulnerable for the Oscar. KPop Demon Hunters wasn’t eligible at BAFTA, which could allow another animated feature to steal the spotlight heading into the Academy Awards. As long as KPop Demon Hunters continues to win everywhere else, though, its absence at BAFTA shouldn’t prevent an Oscar victory.
Despite being nominated for two Oscars, KPop Demon Hunters didn’t meet the eligibility requirements to be submitted for Best Picture consideration. If Netflix had the foresight to position it as a Best Picture player, who knows how far Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans’ film could’ve gone? Even so, KPop Demon Hunters seems poised to be Netflix’s second-biggest winner on Oscar Night. Frankenstein will probably bring them the most wins, with Best Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup/Hairstyling locked up. One Battle After Another and Sinners will likely win the most Oscars. With films like Bugonia and Train Dreams predicted to go home empty-handed, though, KPop Demon Hunters might walk away with more Oscars than some of this year’s Best Picture nominees.
