Bright & Shiny: A History of Animation at Award Shows Volumes 1 & 2
The first two volumes of Bright & Shiny: A History of Animation at Award Shows are now available on Amazon Kindle. You can also get them as ebooks from Barnes & Noble and Apple Books. Volume 1 covers everything from the first Oscar-winning animated short to the Disney Renaissance’s breakthrough on the awards trail, with Beauty and the Beast’s Best Picture nomination. Along the way, we also explore how The Flintstones became the first animated series to be nominated as a comedy at the Emmys and how June Foray created the Annie Awards.
Volume 2 picks up with a deep dive into shows like The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Animaniacs, SpongeBob SquarePants, Samurai Jack, and many others at the Emmys. On the film side, Volume 2 covers everything from Toy Story’s Honorary Oscar to WALL-E’s campaign for a Best Picture nomination. Additionally, Volume 2 explores how Shrek became the first recipient of the Best Animated Feature Oscar and a changing of the tides at the Annie Awards.
Between these two volumes, you’ll also learn inside baseball about your favorite animated movies and shows from the people who made them, including Robert Alvarez, Jerry Beck, Nancy Beiman, Don Bluth, Edwin Catmull, Brenda Chapman, Ruth Clampett, Lorna Cook, Dean DeBlois, Don Hahn, Emily Hubley, Al Jean, Vicky Jenson, Bill Kroyer, Kevin Lima, Margaret Loesch, Alan Menken, Rich Moore, John Musker, Floyd Norman, Tom Ruegger, Chris Sanders, Stephen Schwartz, Fred Seibert, Charles Solomon, and Lee Unkrich, among others.
